Best Place To Stay In Poipu Kauai – It was confusing deciding which island to stay on, whether to split our time between the two areas and which accommodation to get at a higher price.
For us, like for many people, Hawaii is a dream and we want it to be perfect.
Best Place To Stay In Poipu Kauai
In this article, I share my knowledge of places to stay on Kauai, including area comparisons, reviews of places we’ve stayed, and recommendations for places to stay on Kauai.

Here’s a quick rundown of the best hotels, resorts, and lodging options on Kauai. See below for more ideas.
The first decision when planning your trip is the best lodging on Kauai.
If we come in winter (January) the south coast is the most sheltered area as it rains less than the north coast.
In practice we didn’t notice any weather difference between the two coasts and it rained a bit (cloudy days on both sides), maybe we were lucky.

Swimming was better on the south shore (some days were calmer than others and we still had waves), and we loved staying on the beach (we couldn’t go north).
For many people, Poipu and the South Shore are the best areas on Kauai for relaxing and swimming in the calm ocean.
The North Shore is the prettiest part of the island and one of the best places to stay on Kauai.
Accommodation options are limited and more expensive further north, but far from our favorite activities (helicopter tours, boat cruises, Waimea Canyon).

Although the road through Hanalei was closed during our visit, we weren’t able to visit many of the famous beaches or Napali Beach, but there was still plenty to see.
Check out our Best Things to Do in Kauai article for all of our favorite activities and places to eat.
We didn’t spend much time in the east because we didn’t like it as much as the north or south coasts.
But many people prefer to stay here because it is getting cheaper and cheaper, especially since you can choose an area as a base.

Most people take a day trip west instead of staying overnight, but if you’re an avid hiker, you can camp at Kouki State Park (above Waimea Canyon). Advance reservations are required.
Kauai is not a big island and you can walk from side to side in two hours. You can stay in one place and visit the most interesting places in one day trip.
But we wanted to avoid a long drive, so we decided to split our 11 days on Kauai between Poipu on the south coast (6 nights) and Princeville on the north coast (5 nights).
This plan has worked very well for us. We got to see the best of the world, and our daily hikes were manageable distances (the longest was an hour from Poipu to Waimea Canyon).

Changing hotels can be a little stressful, especially when there’s a six-hour gap between check-in and check-out.
I recommend asking for late check-out and early check-out times if possible, buying a cheap Longs cooler to store groceries, and exploring the east coast along the way.
Despite the challenges, we made the right decision and it would be difficult to choose sides.
If we had stayed on the south coast we would have taken a day trip to the north coast and it would have taken longer to explore.

With the North Shore as our base camp, we had to make long drives to our favorite activities.
If you’re staying on Kauai for a week or more, I recommend splitting your time between two locations unless you plan to spend most of your time relaxing at the resort rather than exploring the island.
The most common types of accommodation on Kauai are resorts (large hotels with pools, restaurants, and other amenities) and condominiums (hotels, often with pools but few apartments).
If you want a luxurious Hawaiian experience, perhaps for your honeymoon or anniversary, you should stay at a Kauai resort where everything is local and the service is excellent.
Kauai Vacation Rentals
Located south of Poipu, Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort is considered the best lodging on Kauai.
Located in North Princeville, the 5-star 1 Hanalei Bay Hotel is the ultimate luxury option with a focus on wellness and sustainability. It has some of the highest prices on Kauai.
For a high-end resort, you can expect to pay over $600 a night (and possibly over $1,000 in high season).
If you’re on a budget (Kauai isn’t cheap!), condos are cheaper than resorts.

Even those who cook can eat and save money.
We like having more space with a separate bedroom and living room, and condos often come with amenities like lounge chairs and umbrellas.
We stayed at and wrote reviews of two great condos, Keahuna Plantation to the south and Hanalei Bay Resort to the north.
The cheapest places to stay are on the east coast, where you can find hotels like the Kauai Palms near the airport for under $200 a night.

Vrbo condos in Cape Town are also great value – you pay less for the beach than in Poipu or Hanalei Bay.
A short walk to the beach was important to us, so we paid for it but opted for a unit further from the ocean.
Hotel prices on Kauai vary depending on the time of year and the distance you book.
The cheapest months to travel are from mid-April to early June and from September to mid-December. Reserve as early as possible during high season.
Poipu In Kauai
Check the current price when comparing properties. Taxes and sometimes catering fees, cleaning fees (for residences) and parking fees may be added as additional charges to the quoted prices. It can really help!
For example, a night at the Grand Hyatt Resort in November is listed as $533, but you must include taxes ($41.09), resort fees ($53.08), and resort fees ($54.63) for a total of $682.
Poipu is the most popular area in southern Kauai. There are beautiful beaches, a variety of accommodation (although budget options are limited), restaurants, and shops.
We stayed in a condo at Kiahuna Plantation on beautiful Kiahuna Beach (a quieter extension of Poipu Beach).
South Shore Kauai Resorts
Of all the places we’ve stayed in Hawaii, Kiahuna Plantation is our favorite place to stay.
Kiahuna Plantation is a large complex of one and two bedroom cottages spread over 35 lawned acres with beach access.
Apartments have different owners and staff so they are all set up differently and what you get is a bit of a lottery.
To avoid this, you can book a private group – check out Kiahuna Condos on Vrbo. We booked apartment 106.

You pay more closer to the beach, but we were in the last row (2nd floor of house 17) and still had a sea view.
While we did hear some noise as we approached the street, for the most part we found the place very quiet.
It was a few minutes walk to the beach but we were able to walk barefoot on the beautiful lawns.
Our one bedroom condo is comfortable and fully equipped with good wifi, dishwasher, blender, rice cooker, beach chairs and boogie board.

There is no air conditioning (as is common in Hawaii) but we didn’t miss it because the condo was cool and there are fans and doors to the lanai (balcony) to let the air in.
The bedroom is at the back, no natural light, no view, but the bed was comfortable and there was plenty of storage space. The bathroom is simple but nice.
The kitchen overlooks the living room with chairs, dining table and chairs, simple but tropical decor.
Sliding doors lead to a lanai with a table, chairs and two chairs to enjoy the sea.
The Best Pools In Kauai
Even if you don’t see the sun set below the horizon, the sky glows orange at sunset (see photo above).
There’s no pool on-site, but guests have free use of the pool, gym, and tennis across the street.
Our house didn’t have a washing machine, but the Kiahuna laundry room has plenty of machines and accepts credit cards ($3 per wash or dry).
There are several grills on site. The beach is famous for sunsets
